About Me
Why I Started Autism Adventures ??
My name is Melissa and I have experience teaching in the special education setting. I decided to start this blog to share all of my ideas and creations I have implemented in my classroom with other teachers. I believe that teachers need to work together to develop the curriculum to help our student’s succeed. Never in a million years could I have anticipated the amount of friendships I would make through the online teacher community. The followers and friends I have gained is astonishing. I look forward to the emails I get, the feedback I get and the questions I get. I love communicating with those around me to make our education system a little better each day. Together, WE can make a difference in our student’s lives!
My Teaching Experiences
I have experience teaching in several different elementary settings including general education Kindergarten, upper elementary Mild/Moderate and upper elementary Moderate/Severe. The majority of my teaching experiences were in a 3-6 grade moderate/severe special education classroom where we focused on functional communication, life skills and the basics of behavior. Currently, I am home with my three boys while also managing all things of Autism Adventures.
My Education Background
I got my bachelors degree in Liberal Studies from California State University, Long Beach. ย I currentlyย have two California teaching credentials: Educationย Specialist- Moderate/Severe Disabilities and I also have a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. ย I have also obtained my certificate in Assistive Technology and Augmentative and Alternative Communication. ย These two certificates allow me to better teach my students who have speech and language deficits. ย With this rich knowledge in communication, I am able to better create materials for those students that need to use another mean for communication.
My Personal Life!
I live in Claremont, California with my family. I have three boys; Tucker, Chase and Wells. Our house is loud, wild and dirty but I wouldn’t have it any other way.
